I am beyond excited that it is finally book festival time!! In my opinion, it is the best time of the year.

As you all may be aware, August is festival month in Edinburgh. It all kicks off with the Edinburgh International Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe at the beginning of the month. The whole city is taken over with shows and people! The population triples in size and everywhere you turn there is some sort of performance happening.

Then, the magic comes. For the last two weeks of August, the Edinburgh International Book Festival happens. Charlotte Square in the west of the city turns into an oasis of calm amid the chaos of the festival. It is a place where you can sit down all day and just read. If you are lucky, the sun might even come out for it.

Each year, there is a wonderful programme of ticketed events, as well as free ones. Authors from all over the world descend on Edinburgh to talk about their books and of course do book signings. Each year, there are several themes to the festival, and each event is steered towards these themes. For 2017 those themes are;

  • Age Of Political Earthquakes
  • Babble On – Spoken Word
  • India & Pakistan: 70 Years On
  • Outriders
  • Playing With Books
  • Reading The Final Chapter
  • Stripped 2017
  • Taking The Air
  • This Woman Can
  • Unbound
  • Visions Of The Future
  • Writing The City

Each one has a series of events exploring that theme from various different aspects. It is a great list and is going to be great to look at each one and see what authors have to say about it all.

The festival also has its own independent book shop where you can books from all the authors attending as well as many others. They also have a fabulous children’s book shop and a programme of events specifically designed for children which is great if you have little ones!

This year over 1,000 authors will take part in 800 events at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Sadly I won’t be able to go to them all, but I am going to give it a right good go! So keep your eyes peeled on alishaceit.com as well as my Instagram and Twitter as I take part in this year’s festival.

The 2017 Festival takes place between 12th – 28th August. You can find tickets here

  1. I never knew Edinburgh had this! Such a great idea and I would love to visit! Just another reason to add to my list of why I want to see Edinburgh!
