So, I have been 25 for almost a month now!! There is no escaping the fact that I am now in my mid-twenties. To be honest, it is a pretty terrifying thought, I am not quite sure that I am ready to be this old. I feel like 25 is the age as a kid you thought was a proper grown up. By this point you would be in a “proper grown up job”, you would be married and having babies. Though in reality, I am nowhere near that.
I am a quarter of a century old (how disgusting is that?!!) and while that is quite old, it is also so young! In my 25 years I have learned so much, and changed dramatically over the years. I have had some amazing experiences, as well as some extremely difficult and traumatic experiences. All of these experiences have shaped who I am today and who I will become as I continue to grow up.
To celebrate this momentous occasion, I want to share 25 things I have learned in my 25 years.
1. Listen to music LOUD.
Music is possibly the most beautiful thing in this world, so always listen to it loud! Crank it up and dance & sing around your house like you don’t care!
2. Learn to ask for help.
Sometimes it can be hard to admit you need help, but it is okay. Life isn’t always supposed to be done alone and asking for help isn’t going to make you any less of a person. Really, it will make you stronger.
3. Make your bed every morning.
Okay, I don’t always do this, but when I do it makes a huge difference to my day. I will be less likely to go back to bed during the day, and starting off my day by making my bed I am 110% more productive that day.
4. Stop worrying about what other people think of you.
I have wasted so much of my life worrying what others think of me. I got dressed to please others, I would worry about what my hair looked like or what I said around others. Just be yourself!
5. laugh until it hurts.
Laughing makes life so much better, so don’t be afraid to laugh until it hurts (or until you pee a little!).
6. Always read a book in bed.
This will honestly change your life. Instead of scrolling before you go to sleep, pick up a book. You will have a much better quality of sleep which you will be thankful for in the morning!
7. Don’t do fad diets.
I spent a lot of my teenage years feeling horrible in my own body and trying stupid crash diets that really do more harm than good. I spent so much time worrying about what I was eating and how I looked instead of just enjoying my life.
8. Embrace the single life.
This has always been a difficult one for me, but being single is actually such a good experience to have. While I was single I had time to learn more about myself and become more confident in knowing what I want from life. Without that time I don’t think my current relationship would be as good as it is. I don’t feel like I rely on him for my own happiness, instead he just enhances that happiness.
9. Saying no is okay.
I recently realised the power of saying NO. I am a bit of a people pleaser and would always just say yes to plans, even when I didn’t want to do it. It is okay to say no to things you don’t really want to do. whether that be going out with people or things at work. It is such a waste to spend time doing things that don’t make you happy.
10. Remember the dark times will pass.
This is one that can be difficult. There will be times in your life that won’t be easy. There will be days that feel like total darkness. But they do pass, I promise you. It can be hard to remember that when you are in those dark days, but there is always light at the end of it.
11. Be silly.
Life shouldn’t always be so serious. Take time to be silly. Sing in funny voices, make jokes and just have fun. No matter how old you are, you should have some silly moments.
12. Always have dry shampoo near you.
This might be the greatest invention in the world! A quick spray and your hair has a new lease of life, and so do you!
13. Don’t waste time, or money, on horrible coffee!
This is a big one for me! Life is too short for bad coffee, so please don’t waste your money, time & tastebuds on horrible coffee! Visit your local, independent speciality coffee shop and enjoy the high quality & delicious coffee. Not only does it taste good, it is also better for everyone, from the farmers growing it to the small business owner.
14. ALWAYS pee after sex!
honestly, you will thank me for this one! This is one I think everyone should be taught at school, I would have been grateful for this one, especially after suffering a horrible UTI! So, as much as you want to lie there cuddling with your beau, get up and pee!! It will stop you from getting an extremely painful UTI from all that sweet, sweet loving 😉
15. Don’t judge others.
Judging people takes a lot of negative energy, which takes over your whole being. Don’t be a negative nelly, be nice. Judging people is up to God, not you!
16. Don’t shave for a boy!
I spent so much time, money and effort and shaving for boys. I worried they would be disgusted my the hair on my legs (and between them!), but really, they do not care! Hair is natural and you should do what makes you happy. If shaving makes you happy, then great! But if it is more effort than its worth, then don’t do it! I am so much happier now I am not worrying about the hair on my legs!
17. Always go to a professional.
Whether thats getting your eyebrows waxed or feeling unwell, go see a professional. Googling symptoms will only make it worse, and plucking your own eyebrows ends in disaster!
18. Don’t be afraid of big pants!
I made the switch about 2 years ago and it has changed my life! Big pants are COMFORTABLE!! No more wedgies for this gal!
19. Not everyone will like you.
Unfortunately, this is a fact of life. Not everyone you meet will like you, but that is okay. Just don’t waste time trying to convince them otherwise!
20. Tell people that you love them.
Your siblings, your parents, your friends, partners. Just say I love you!
21. Send cards.
Birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries or just because! A hand written card is so much nicer that a text or a facebook post!
22. Compliment people.
If you like the dress the girl on the bus is wearing, tell her. Is your best friend having a great hair day? Tell them! Giving out genuine compliments to people brightens their day and gives you a warm feeling in your belly!
23. Trust your gut feelings.
If you think something isn’t right, do something about it. Always trust your gut. Always.
24. Everything in moderation.
From chocolate to social media, it is important to do everything in moderation. Too much of anything can be seriously damaging.
25. Look after yourself first.
You can’t function as a proper human if you don’t look after yourself. Don’t put yourself down, look after your mind and body. It is the only one you get.
